Rainbow in my pocket

I can’t recall when was the last time I saw a rainbow. While waiting to see another one, please oblige me as I remind myself of one rainbow I saw some time ago.

The barrel of words is near empty, and so I tilt it in the hopes that at the very least, a drop of thought could somehow kiss the parched land that is this space.

Like a familiar refrain that plays again and again, a random line, of four words, reverberates in my head. Begging, pleading, Could you please hear me out? Now if a song prods you to jubilant singing (my impromptu singing of Christmas carols on my way up the 4th floor comes to mind), you don’t say No. You say, Wait, and then heartily belt out the stanzas (just make sure nobody’s within hearing distance).

The line goes: Rainbow in my pocket.

No doubt this was inspired by my cellphone wallpaper, a picture which I took with my low-res camera phone yesterday. J, on the next cubicle, made me pause from my reading and look outside the window. There it was, arching in the sky—a rainbow. I tried to recall then when was the last time I saw one, and then gave up after ten seconds. Can’t recall. Must be a long time ago.

A day after its appearance and I am still thinking about the rainbow. As I type this, the rain is making staccato sounds on the roof. The night is colder than usual but not even the cold can make me snuggle under my blanket and sleep without writing.

Some people carry a lucky coin in their pocket or stroke a charm for good luck. I have neither but what I have is better.

A rainbow in my pocket.

I keep it not to attract good luck but to give muscles to my memory. For this sometimes-forgetful gal needs to remember that no matter how hard the rain may fall, an unseen brush can sweep across the sky after and paint this arch of promise. And on this curved strip is written:

Smile. There will be better days ahead. :)

  1. For some, a gold credit card will do as a lucky charm in their wallet, haha. That is, until they get the monthly billing, wahaha. :-D

A “gold” in your pocket, now that’s different. :) O nga, pagdating ng billing statement, bad luck na yun. hehe.

  2. I decided to window shop after a very busy day in the office and while walking towards the mall… I saw people gazing at the sky… when i look up there was a big rainbow. I felt like a child and i had this one big smile… Gusto ko sanang huminto at nakatingin lng doon hanggang mawala yong rainbow, pero parang nakakahiya… ang daming tao… :)

You must have been afraid that people might think, “First time mo makakita ng rainbow?” But then again, how often do we really see rainbows? Kaya ok lang when we allow ourselves to be spellbound and awestruck once in a while. After all, these things are still miracles. No laboratory in the world can hang a rainbow in the sky.

  3. As you know, I so love rainbows!! I haven’t seen one yet since I came here–but the rainbow sunset in Baguio is my pabaon coming here–it reminds me of God’s promises. :)

Hi Gypsy, I wonder if looking at rainbows will feel different when you’re in another place. :) Even if you don’t see a rainbow splashed across the skies there, hope God will show you a rainbow through the smile of a friend, the presence of furry animals by your window. Or an excellent grade in one of your subjects! ;)

  4. the last time i saw a rainbow was last nov 2 on our flight to roxas. me turbulence na nakakatakot pero as soon as natapos yung turbulence me nakita kaming rainbow.

Hi Carlotta, I read your account (flight to Roxas). Nice no, how God reassures us through the simplest ways, in the most timely manner. These times you don’t think there’s no such think as coincidence or accidents. Somebody infinitely Wiser than we are orchestrates everything. There’s no such thing as an ordinary miracle. :)

  5. the last time i saw rainbow? when I watched evan almighty with the boys, hehe (my eldest son reminded us “it’s just a movie, right? that’s not how the Bible tells the ark’s story.”) Where we live we have better view of rainbow and the moon and the stars. This year, I can count at least 2 times we saw rainbow and the boys are always excited to see one. There was even a time a plane flew over the rainbow. Well, we’re so engrossed we forgot the camera.
Your rainbow photo’s nice (it’s not the cam’s resolution, but the perspective). Since you shot it through the glass window, i almost see your smiling face nag-reflect sa glass. tapos seeing through your face, nandun yung rainbow :-) (although, maybe, it’s an 8 o’ clock angle from the window). And because the rainbow connects the two buildings, it looks easier to climb from low rooftop to the high-rise’.

Hi Mommy G! It must be quite a sight to see a plane flying over a rainbow. It must seem like the plane was playing. Sayang nga, di nyo nakuha camera niyo. But I’m sure, if you had your camera with you then, you would’ve taken a beautiful shot of the rainbow. :) It’s about time you put your camera-clicking fingers to use. :)
Naks, thanks for the compliment about the shot. Di ko na naisip yung mga artistic-artistic. All I wanted then was take a picture of the rainbow while it was still there. It’s amazing what you notice, even the “connection” of the low and high buildings! :)

  6. I have seen so many types of rainbows—not to make you envious but to stretch your knowledge of God’s favorite pasttime :-) (rainbowplay)!
Rainbows upon rainbows like gateways or going through a tunnel of rainbows. Rainbows blinking left and right of you like playing hide and seek—now you see me, now you don’t. A huge complete rainbow during midnight (pure white!) A flock of birds flying over a rainbow. Rainbow on a dewy leaf. A huge rainbow accompanying you while you drive along the seacoast.

But, thank you for that very nice image of “a rainbow in my pocket.” I like it very much!

HI Ate Bernadette–wow, rainbow at night! But if it was pure white, how did you know it was a rainbow? Because of its arc? A flock of birds flying over a rainbow? That must have been an awesome sight. Now, I’m envious, haha. Walang sinabi itong rainbow ko. hehe. But I’ll keep the rainbow in my pocket, or the one in my heart. :)

  7. ey ate beng…waaah ang galing nacapture mo yung picture ng rainbow. I remembered on my way home from baguio last year 2 ang rainbow(s) na nakita ko. ang masaya pa. sabay sila, may isa sa left, may isa sa right. Amazing how God can put a smile on our face through His creation. I’m thinking what must have Noah felt when he sae the first rainbow ever. :) Smile ate, God is with us. :)

Hi Ives, that I haven’t seen yet–2 rainbows at the same time! That must’ve been awesome. :) Yup. God didn’t go stingy with all the beautiful things He showered us with. He could’ve created the world in black and white and we wouldn’t have known the difference!

  8. i haven’t seen a rainbow in a longtime.. thanks for sharing the pic and the thougts…

Hi Jen, sana may makita kang rainbow — sa France! :) Sosyal!

  9. come to think of it…I also can’t remember the last time I saw one. Oh well…

Nicely written Beng…feel-good entry =) now I’m kinda inspired and optimistic about things.

Hi Verns, kamusta ka na? Rains and rainbows, magkasunod lagi yun, intay mo lang yun rainbows. :) Thanks for the comment. Sulit ang oras ko sa pagsusulat nito, just for helping you feel kinda inspired and optimistic.

  10. btw, that building in the foreground looks familiar. is that gcf?

Hi Carlotta, nope, not GCF. I’m somewhere in Boni Avenue when I took that pic from the 4th floor.:)

  11. Beng,

Na-check mona ba sa Northwest yung airline tickets? Are you still planning on coming over? Let Nang and I know ok?

Hi Rae, nektaym na lang. I weighed the pros and cons of flying over. The cons outweighed the pros, by a considerable margin. But God knows how much I want to spend Christmas with all of you there.

  12. This is such a heartwarming post. And “Rainbow In A Pocket” sounds poetic. Me, I have “Hong Kong in My Pocket.” :D

Thanks, Abaniko. :) Wow, you’re the only one who noticed that i meant that line to be poetic. Why Hong Kong in your pocket? Keychain mo galing HK? (I’m guessing here!)

  13. How heartwarming. Can I carry seven rainbows in my pocket?

Thanks for making a comment again, Abaniko. :) You may carry as many rainbows as you want in your pocket.

  14. i just saw a complete rainbow this afternoon and I recall your post..so i share this comment with you once more! I had placed that rainbow in my pocket for future use! :-) Thanks Beng!

  15. Now when was the last time I saw a complete rainbow? I can’t recall. But thanks for confirming to me that they still do appear. Maybe one of these days I’d catch one. ;) Salamat.
