Constant

I’ve never been good at Math. If I remember correctly, I flunked a couple of HS subjects that necessitated me doing computations of any kind. Let’s see…Trigonometry (or was it Algebra?). Statistics. And oh, yes the other one was a Science subject that needed a bit of Math, Chemistry. I unfortunately lost precious summer hours going to school to have another chance at understanding mathematical principles. Even now, Math can sometimes give me a hard time. When, while cooking, I’d have to convert the grams, the Fahrenheit and other measurements when the need arises for it in the recipe.

But lately I have been thinking of a word that is included in the glossary of mathematical terms: CONSTANT. Merriam-Webster describes it as thus: a number that is assumed not to change value in a given mathematical discussion. As the term suggests, you can count on a constant to be invariable, unchanging. If the value assigned to a constant is a 5, it will remain a 5. It will not suddenly increase to a 6 or decrease to a 4.

Now what made me, a Math-allergic editor, consider this concept? One thing: Of all the changes that will and can happen in my life, there is one constant that makes me feel safe: the nature and character of God. It’s easy to think of God being all wonderful and faithful and all the superlatives when you’re perfectly healthy, you’re up for a promotion at work. You’ve got all your ducks lined up in a row. Life is great. But what about times when you’re sick in bed, work is difficult, and you don’t know where to go to next? Does your view of God change? From being a loving, caring God, in your mind, does He suddenly transform into a cruel, cold tyrant whose main job is to make you miserable?

Whenever there are things about life that I don’t understand, I try to remind myself that God is constant. Yes, doubts and fears can assail me, and frankly, I could toss and turn all night yet I still won’t have an answer to my questions the morning I wake up (if I ever sleep at all). But so far my experience in life has thus taught me: God does not change; He is immutable. Put simply, constant. He is not a capricious, double-minded supreme being who, on a whim, would decide to shake the earth just to see how I would react when I’m admiring a rainbow.

Nobody wants to be in a position where he’s clueless about today or insecure about tomorrow. Maybe that’s where I am right now. But what keeps me from getting swept away by all sorts of emotions is the constancy of God. If my memory serves me right, He has never left me. Even when He is silent, my heart still tells me He’s there. I have been a witness to the many miracles and surprises from His powerful hand and loving heart. Bad times do not last forever, even when you feel you’ll be in the pits for eternity. In my dictionary, God is I-can’t-believe-how-good-He-is good. That good.

Constant. I love this term. And I don’t even have to do any mathematical equation to appreciate it. All this blogger needs to do is to look up.

Trust His Heart*

God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don’t understand
When you don’t see His plan
When you can’t trace His hand
Trust His heart

  1. You’re not the only one who’s allergic to math. I hated the subject too. But you know what the weird thing is? I took up a course that required me to do a lot of mathematical calculations back in college, architecture… go figure.

Me go figure? But I hate figures! ;) Most men like Math so you’re an exception. I took up an Arts course in college that made me take only 4 Math subjects in my freshman and sophomore years. Ipinasa ko naman. :) No summer classes for me in college.

  2. You’ve chosen one word: constant! But you say so much with it that one can almost feel the onslaught of emotions driving the need for constancy.

Conversely, let me suggest flexibility too is a gift and is representative of that higher power!

    All the best to you.

Thanks for dropping by, milkyminxor. :) All the best to you too.

  3. Try singing CONSTANTLY by Cliff Richard

Ganda nga ng lyrics. It deserves another post. Do you have an mp3 of this song? Could you give me?Will give you my USB. :)

  4. i hate math too, but for some reason i enjoyed stats :D

i love that song trust his heart. ^^

Really? The only stat I’m interested in right now is my Blog stats! haha.

Yes, it’s a good song. Been singing it lately. :)

  5. Believe in the Constant always. :D

Yup, the One and Only Constant in my life. :)

  6. And they said that God is the greatest mathematician—or that he invented mathematics :-) (who else?) I bought a tee-shirt with a saying “there are three types of people in the world—those who know mathematics and those who don’t.” That’s me speaking. My husband is an engineer—a German engineer! And that is the way God made learn my math (ha-ha!) constantly. Yah, the lyrics are sooo apt in my life too!

He must be the greatest mathematician. If He designed the universe, making sure that the planets, stars and all the heavenly bodies do not collide with each other! You need to compute that, right? :) Hey, your tee-shirt sounds cool. I’d like to get one for myself if and when I see it. Good to know that your German engineer husband is helping you cope with your, er, mathematical limitations. haha. :)

  7. The first thing that came to mind upon reading this post is the hymn, “Constantly Abiding”.

Hmm, I am not too familiar with that hymn but when I checked out the lyrics, realized why you thought of it. Yeah, very apt. I praise God for His constant abiding. Thanks for the thought, Lazarus. :)

  8. Nice reminder, Beng. God never changes, up or down; He remains the same. We’re going through the attributes of God in church and we just finished that theme two Sundays ago. I never can get enough of it.

Mental note for me: Read our book by republished book by Evans, Our God is Awesome. Yes Ben, I agree. :) Ang galing no? His attributes are worth blogging about anytime and everytime.

  9. Amen! Changes are the only “other” constant aside from God. Imagine if He wasn’t around. Yikes!

I can’t imagine! Yes, in the midst of the changes, He’s the only anchor we can hold on to so we don’t get swept away by the torrents. :)

  10. somewhere in the good book, God said “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

now THAT’S what I call, constant with a “K” (I think it’s the mathematical symbol for constant)

Greetings! Got here from Snglguy’s blog.

Hi TK. Thanks for dropping by. :) K pala ang symbol for constant. I didn’t remember that. Hey, you’ve got an interesting site too. Will drop by again soon.
